LionsHEART (Health Equity& Accessible Resource Training)

Introducing the nation’s first adaptive medical station for individuals with vision loss. This innovative station provides people who are blind or visually impaired a better way to manage chronic diseases like diabetes. This resource provides audible glucometer, blood pressure machine, scale, and other adaptive technologies that empower employees to take control of their health. 70% of individuals with vision loss are under/unemployed. By employing over 130 individuals with vision loss we offer a way for families to provide for their families and be contributing members of society. Another statistic we address is the number of individuals with vision loss who have diabetes: 21%. Our LionsHEART allows employees to remain healthy and have access to tools that help them manage their health.

  • Equip individuals with vision loss with accessible tools to independently monitor and manage their health metrics, including blood pressure, oxygen levels, weight, and blood sugar levels.
  • Reduce barriers to healthcare access by providing adaptive medical stations that facilitate telehealth appointments and audible health management devices.
  • Minimize missed work time and improve employee productivity by enabling onsite health monitoring and reducing the need for transportation to healthcare facilities.

In Charlotte, NC, the connection between vision loss and mental health is a critical issue. According to 2019 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), 50.8% of individuals who are blind or have low vision in North Carolina experience depression—more than double the rate of those without vision impairment (21.3%). The impact is even greater among those unable to work due to vision loss, with 67.4% reporting depression. Additionally, individuals with vision loss are more likely to face chronic health conditions, lower income levels, and poorer overall health outcomes. To address this urgent need, the LionsHEART will offer dedicated mental health services, connecting individuals with a professional counselor for support and guidance
