Blind Employee of the Year 2026
James “Jay” Russell
A Journey of Growth, Resilience & Impact
Jay has been a valued member of Lions Services for 12 years. Visually impaired since birth, Jay has built a successful career by embracing new opportunities, learning new skills, and demonstrating that blindness does not limit his ability to contribute, grow, and succeed in the workplace. Before joining Lions Services, Jay worked as a florist and had no prior manufacturing experience. Over the past 12 years, he has successfully transitioned into manufacturing and developed expertise in machine operation and production assembly. Through cross-training and his willingness to adapt, Jay has become a versatile team member who is ready to step in wherever he is needed.
A Role Model for Others
Jay is known for his strong work ethic, positive attitude, and commitment to producing high-quality work. He takes pride in everything he does and consistently goes the extra mile to support his team and Lions Services. Jay is not only building his own career, he serves as an example to other employees of what is possible when individuals are given the opportunity to develop their skills and pursue their goals.
Recognized on a National Stage
In February 2026, Jay represented Lions Services at the National Industries for the Blind’s Realizing America’s Promise Conference & Expo in Washington, D.C. During the conference, Jay was honored as a 2026 Peter J. Salmon Employee of the Year Nominee, recognizing his outstanding contributions, dedication, and accomplishments as an employee who is visually impaired. This national recognition celebrates not only Jay’s individual achievements, but also the importance of creating meaningful employment opportunities where people who are blind can build careers, develop skills, and achieve economic independence.
“Lions Services is not only a place of business, but also a place of inspiration.” — Jay
